Highway or back roads  16th May 2021   Podcast Version >>

My very first blog in July 2020, was about marketing. My worries, fears, and learning.

I was taking it a step at a time but ultimately planned to zoom down the advertising highway to author stardom and have continued to research, watch videos, listen to podcasts, and read books and blogs about marketing.

However, the advertising highway leads to a concrete jungle full of pitfalls, traps for the unwary, labyrinthian pathways, pressure, stressful analytics, brain power I’d rather use elsewhere, and a huge amount of time not writing.

Not my cup of herbal tea at all.

I love the quiet life, meandering along the tree-lined back roads, picking up hitchhikers along the way, connecting with people on a personal level while continuing to write, write, and write some more.

All my marketing is now created through what I love doing - writing.

I reach different people each week with my blogs as my writing flows from author posts to stories, poems, cycle adventures, forest garden exploration, and observations about the natural world.

Through my blog I am gathering readers, some of whom transform into website subscribers. It’s a quiet trickle, but it’s happening.

I love creating free eBooks for my Secret Library to say thank you to subscribers and as I write across genres this is pulling in new people all the time, and I hope if they pop in to download one book, they may decide to try something else too. My recent addition of a book about my Forest Garden has increased subscriptions to the dizzying height of forty. That may sound like a very small email list, but they are all ‘real’ subscribers, not fluffy filling. I am happy with the progress and am grateful for each one.

My monthly newsletter was a little dry, so I’ve spiced it up with a strange fact and more chat. It’s more me and I shall include something for the gardeners each month now too.

I am continuing to interview other authors, although I have reduced this to one a month as I will also be reviewing one of their books. It’s a lovely way to connect and support other writers, especially Indie writers, and I get to read stories I may never have noticed in the vastness of the book ocean. I like to help others, I always have, and if someone new finds me through these interviews then that’s a plus I ‘m grateful for.

I’m travelling as slow as a snail with my podcast audience, but it is growing, and I love making it. I know not everyone likes to read so I feel like I am filling a different niche with my short episodes. I’m also gaining confidence with reading aloud and one day I will make some audio books of my stories.

I write for readers and read aloud for listeners, but I’m missing one audience.

The watchers.

I am now making short videos about my author life, where I shall share stories, poems, book reviews, writing process, problems, successes, and some random thoughts.

It’s my way of being social and connecting with people from all over the world without leaving my writing hut. No stress, only what I am comfortable with.

I have found my way of marketing.

I am doing it through being me, socialising on my terms, and enjoying connecting with people one at a time, slowly gathering moss.

If you enjoy reading my blogs, maybe you know someone who’d prefer to listen to my podcast or watch my videos, please let them know I exist.

If you want to read more of my writing, visit my Secret Library and download a free eBook or visit my book page and buy one of my novels.

If you want to connect with me on a personal level, leave a comment or send me a message on the contact me page. I will reply, but probably not immediately so please be patient.
